Training and mentoring patients for better oral health
As part of our commitment to embracing all aspects of preventive dentistry at York Place Dental, we are proud to be one of the few practices in North Cumbria employing an Oral Health Educator.
The OHE works with our hygiene team and dentists to help train and mentor our patients in how to keep their mouths as healthy as possible.
An integral part of our new children’s plans at York Place Dental, our Oral Health Educator will see your child at three, six or 12-monthly intervals, depending upon their needs. The appointments with the Oral Health Educator are deliberately informal and fun, but structured in a way to be able to teach your child, or an adult, how to look after their teeth in the most appropriate manner, depending upon their individual needs and abilities.
Typically, our Oral Health Educator will carry out therapies from the following list:
- Tooth-brushing instruction.
- Instruction in how best to use an electric, or manual toothbrush.
- Showing how best to clean between your teeth – should it be floss? Should it be brushes? Or is there another way of doing it?
- Advice on healthy diets.
- If necessary, at the dentist’s request, they can apply fluoride gel to the patient’s teeth.
- How to look after your teeth if you are wearing braces.
- Advice for nursing mums, whose children are teething.
